CIRA

Overview

A full-day tour to Capua (six hours from Firenze) to visit CIRA’s facilities.

CIRA is the Italian Aerospace Research Center. It is well-known for its unique in the world – in size and operational envelope – testing facilities, such as the Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT), for ice and aerodynamic testing, to reproduce natural icing conditions in compliance with FAR, for design and certification of aircraft/rotorcraft subsystems; the Plasma Wind Tunnel (PWT), to simulate the extreme heat flux and pressure conditions to which are exposed space vehicles re-entering in Earth’s atmosphere. Other unique test facilities are LISA, an impact laboratory for full-scale crash tests; PT-1, the transonic tunnel; the laboratories for adaptive structures, advanced materials, and acoustic and vibroacoustic characterization; and the Space Qualification Laboratory.
The company specializes in many fields of aerospace research, from the study of aeronautical craft and spacecraft able to fly autonomously and at very high speeds to the development of innovative systems that can reduce the environmental impact of aircraft, increase flight safety, and improve air traffic management.
The company also focuses on the development of technologies for the space transport systems of tomorrow and space exploration missions.
